Warangal: Warangal Police Commissionerate may have hit the headlines quite often this year with a host of initiatives to turn Warangal a safe and secure place, but at the end of the day what ultimately speaks for them is its performance. And rightfully so. The 2016 year-end crime profile out on Wednesday revealed a significant fall in the crime rate compared to two previous years, further boosting the image of the Commissionerate.

It was a year to remember for the Commissionerate Police, especially to the Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu. Besides having a shot at the Guinness Book of World Record by organising ‘largest self-defence lesson at a single venue’ recently, the Commissionerate created a sort of record when it achieved the distinction of being free from pending NBWs for the two consecutive years in the country.

The Commissionerate topped the State by achieving 75.19 per cent recovery (Rs 3.32 crore) and 63 per cent crime detection in property related offences. The conviction rate has also increased substantially during the year when compared to 2015. As many as 1,074 persons have been convicted under different cases.

This apart, major crimes such as thefts, robberies and SC/ST cases went down. The number of road accidents in the region was 1,148 against last year’s 1,308. The number of deaths in fatal accidents remained more or less same with 395 against 398 in 2015. But for the 26 dowry deaths, the crime against women such as rape and 498A cases witnessed a decrease compared to previous year.

It may be noted here that since the reorganisation of the districts, the territorial jurisdiction of the Commissionerate has been extended and it also a reason for increase in crime rate of certain heads. Now there are 44 police stations in the ambit of the Commissionerate against 19 last year.

Sudheer Babu, who came out with some of the out-of-the-box initiatives such as ‘Basti Mitra’, aimed at providing jobs to youths living in bastis (slums), ‘Sumarg’, free coaching programmes to youths appearing for the competitive exams, and senior citizen care and concern, also has the credit of introducing several citizen–friendly like WhatsApp helpline and Hawk Eye, a mobile app that lets the citizens in distress to contact the cops.

“As part of smart policing, we campaigned extensively for the third eye surveillance in the Commissionerate. A whopping 14,107 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras have been installed and integrated with the police command control rooms in 14 police stations limits,” Sudheer Babu said.

The Commissionerate is also in the forefront of government’s flagship programmes. As part of Haritha Haram, the cops planted 10.51 lakh saplings. This apart, the police also adopted six minor irrigation tanks under Mission Kakatiya and 13 villages under Grama Jyothy and developed.
