He inaugurated 28th National Safety week-long celebrations organised under District Police and Traffic department in the premises of Late John Wilson Open Theatre in the Commissionerate here on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the Collector said that many road accidents that have been taking place are due to the mistakes committed by the people.
So, people must be responsible and must follow the traffic rule strictly to prevent them. 40 per cent of the total accidents that take place in the district are road accidents. Victims of accidents lose their property and sometimes valuable lives also.
Those, who sustained severe injuries or amputated, are leading miserable lives and also creating problems to their family members, who are dependent on them, he observed.
Every person must and should follow the traffic rules strictly to avoid and prevent road accidents. Commissioner of Police V B Kamalasan Reddy said that the number of people died in road accidents is more than that who lost their lives fighting in war.
About 226 members died and 540 members injured in road accidents under the Commissionerate limits last year. Most of the accidents took place due to fast driving or drunk driving or negligent driving, he added.
City Mayor Ravinder Singh released wall posters and brochures on safety measures to be taken while driving vehicles. Transport Department Officer Vinod Kumar, Municipal Commissioner Shashank, Shanti Committee representative Ghanshyam Ojha and Peddi Ramesh were present along with others.
