Warangal: Students should choose their field of study based on their interest in the subject instead of making a choice under peer or parental pressure, suggested Prof Sundaram Thangavelu of Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

Speaking after receiving ‘Mathematician of the Year Award’ for the year 2016, here on Wednesday the professor said it was not necessary for every student to choose engineering. One should go by his or her interest while choosing a field of study.

The award was instituted by National Institute of Technology Warangal in association with Ponnala Foundation, a charitable organisation, headed by former minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah.

In his address, Prof Thangavelu expressed concern over the fact the India was not able to produce good number of mathematicians matching its size. In the US and European nations the universities have large number of mathematics faculty while in India the number was often very less. Patronage to mathematics was on the decline in India though a small nation like Poland has more mathematicians.

‘There seems to be something wrong with the education system in our country and the outlook of society towards education and hence we are not able produce Nobel Laureates,’ Prof Thangavelu felt.

But there has been a ray of hope as in recent times a good number of young mathematicians are coming up, he added.
