Crime detection goes high-tech: Warangal Commissionerate

Cops in tune with changing times
Hanamkonda: With the Forensic Science reaching new heights, the onus is on the cops to be adept with the changing times. That’s what exactly Warangal Police Commissionerate is doing at the moment.
The Commissionerate Police has on Thursday added the latest state-of-the-art PAPILLION-Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) that provides extended scope for research with increasing database of fingerprints and the requirement of reduced processing time.
The new device, which has a live palm-print scanner that helps the cops to instantly verify veracity of suspects using an Android phone, replaces the Fingerprints Analysis and Criminal Tracing System (FACTS) currently in vogue since 1999.
The old system allowed police to collect fingerprints through ink, slab and rolling method, after which they used to upload for analysis.
Commissioner of Police G Sudheer Babu told The Hans India: “The need of the hour for the police is a combination of native intelligence and familiarity with the modern crime investigating technology.
The Mobile Security Check Device (MSCD) allows detection of the image of the suspects just by the touch of fingers. The device that works on Russian technology also allows real-time cross check of suspects’ fingerprints with the database of the AFIS server.”
Now, it takes just six minutes to take fingerprints of a suspect and upload it to the online server, he said, referring to the tedious and time-consuming process of FACTS.
The new device is of immense help for the police on night patrolling duty for on-field verification of individuals having criminal record without wasting time.
It’s learnt that initially a mobile security check device each will be provided to Mattewada, Intezar Gunj, Mills Colony, Hanamkonda, KUC, Subedari and Kazipet police stations in the Central Zone, besides one each to Narsampet (East Zone) and Jangaon (West Zone). This apart, the Commissionerate has also procured three live scanners.
