World Heritage List: Examination of Ramappa temple nomination put off
The UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) has postponed the examination of nomination of Ramappa Temple in Jayashankar Bhupalpalli district for inscription on the World Heritage List to its next session.
Warangal: The UNESCO World Heritage Committee (WHC) has postponed the examination of nomination of Ramappa Temple in Jayashankar Bhupalpalli district for inscription on the World Heritage List to its next session.
The Heritage Committee is the main body in charge of the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and has the final say on whether a property is inscribed on the World Heritage List. The committee has on last Saturday inscribed historic city of Ahmedabad on the World Heritage List from India.
The committee, at its ongoing 41st session in Krakow of Poland, decided to examine the nomination of Ramappa Temple at its 42nd session to be held in 2018.
This year on January 31 the nomination under the title ‘The Glorious Kakatiya Temples and Gateways –Ramappa Temple’ was submitted under natural sites category.
However, the WHC has found the nomination incomplete and has sought some clarifications regarding the nomination. “We are yet to receive communication from the WHC in this connection,” the Kakatiya Heritage Trust (KHT) Trustee Prof M Panduranga Rao told The Hans India.
A revised dossier would be submitted after receiving communication from the Heritage Committee in compliance with the operational guidelines. Following which the committee representatives would visit the temple at Palampet of Venkatapur mandal for inspection, he added.
A consultancy, named ‘Kshetra’ led by an architect GV Suryanarayana Murthy, has been hired to compile the dossier. The consultancy worked under the supervision of the KHT trustees Prof Panduranga Rao and BV Papa Rao, the Advisor to State government.
The Union Ministry of Culture though its delegation to UNESCO has submitted the dossier containing 200 pages to grant recognition to historic Ramappa Temple as World Heritage Site. The dossier is supposed to explain ‘Outstanding Universal Value’ of the Kakatiya temple belonging to 13th century.
The dossier has in detail explained the Outstanding Universal Value to the structure. It contains the unique geo-technology employed in the construction of the temple like sand-box technology of Kakatiyas’ and floating bricks having a density of 0.09 gram/CC.
In the year 2016, the authorities concerned have submitted a proposal to Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) seeking to file the nomination to the WHC. But the proposal struck up in New Delhi due to some technical reasons and failed to make it on time.
It may be noted that Swayambhu Temple and Keerthi Thoranas at Warangal Fort and Rudreswara Swamy Thousand Pillars Temple in Hanamkonda are on the UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites tentative list since 2014, besides more than 40 properties from India.
Currently there are no World Heritage Sites in Telugu states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. It is hoped that Ramappa Temple may likely address such a lacking by making to World Heritage List.
