Warangal: Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has demanded the State set up a price stabilisation fund (PSF) with Rs 1,000 crore to help the farmers distraught by poor prices and vagaries of nature that affect the prices.

A delegation of the TDP leaders comprising L Ramana, M Narasimhulu, R Prakash Reddy and others has visited Enumamula agricultural market in Warangal on Thursday. Later a padayatra was taken out by the leaders from Enumamula market to the district collectorate in Hanamkonda to highlight farmers’ problems.

Speaking to presspersons on the occasion, the leaders demanded the government initiation of immediate measures towards setting up the price stabilisation fund. The TRS government, despite tall claims of supporting the farmers has failed to come to the rescue of farming community in Telangana, they said. During the past four years of its rule, the TRS government was confined to only making promises, which were not delivered. As a result, more than 3,700 farmers committed suicides in the state since the formation of Telangana State, complained Ramana.

None of the ruling party leaders or concerned ministers has visited the affected families and they were left to their fate. The government must pay a compensation of Rs 6 lakh to each of the families of the farmers, who committed suicide since separate Telangana State was formed, he demanded.

Prakash Reddy accused the government of avoiding farmers’ issues. No steps were taken to ensure minimum support price to agriculture produce. He opined that the promise of offering Rs 4,000 input per acre to farmers would not help farmers. Instead measures have to be taken to offer MSP along with setting up price stabilisation fund, he said.

Narsimhulu noted that the farming community was the most affected one in the TRS rule. The government must offer compensation to the cotton and paddy farmers, who lost crops due to pests and bad weather conditions. Later the TDP leaders submitted a memorandum of demands to the officials at the district collectorate.
