The 16th edition of SR Champions Trophy-South India Inter Engineering Collegiate (T-20) Cricket Tournament, has got underway in a colourful manner here on Wednesday. Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president and adviser to the Telangana government Dr G Vivekanand launched the seven-day tournament at a ceremony at SR Engineering College (SREC) Ananthsagar campus in Warangal.

Warangal: The 16th edition of SR Champions Trophy-South India Inter Engineering Collegiate (T-20) Cricket Tournament, has got underway in a colourful manner here on Wednesday. Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) president and adviser to the Telangana government Dr G Vivekanand launched the seven-day tournament at a ceremony at SR Engineering College (SREC) Ananthsagar campus in Warangal.

About 46 teams from various engineering colleges in south India are participating in the tournament, being organised by SREC’s sports and physical education department. SR Educational Academy Chairman A Varada Reddy, Director CV Guru Rao and Principal V Mahesh attended the inaugural ceremony.

Addressing the teams, Vivekanand noted that taking part in sports played an important role in shaping his life. “It helps us to get going in adverse situations and motivates us to achieve goals with sportive spirit,” he said asking students to give equal importance to sports and games on par with academics.

Efforts are being made by the HCA to promote cricket and help players to play at State, national and international-level, he said and congratulated SREC management for conducting the event. He asked the players of all the teams to take part with good sportsmanship.

The Educational Academy Chairman Varada Reddy in his address thanked the players and institutions participating in the tournament. The event is being conducted to ensure sports and cultural activities a part of student’s lives and to develop their personalities, he added.

He revealed that the college management and department of physical education are planning to conduct national-level cricket tournament in the coming future. The HCA president Dr Vivekanand assured to offer the association’s guidance and support to the institution in that task.

Sports Committee Chairman Pramod, Physical Director and Tournament Coordinator P Srinivas, Warangal Cricket Association secretary Srinivas and others were present. On the first day of the tournament, Gitam, Hyderabad beaten SBIT, Hyderabad; CMRIT, Hyderabad lost to KUCET, Warangal and KLRCET, Paloncha beaten Vaagdevi College of Engineering, Warangal.
