Bachupally: A boot-camp and hackathon on Internet of Things (IoT) has been concluded at VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology on Sunday. The boot-camp was conducted by Idea-Labs is the first of its kind that presents LoRa technology.

A total of 116 engineering students from various disciplines including EEE, ECE, and AE participated enthusiastically in the boot-camp which culminated in a 36-hour overnight hackathon participated by 28 teams.

LoRa technology is the latest communication standard for IoT applications and the hardware used in this hackathon was imported from the USA and Singapore. Mentors from IdeaLabs have trained the students in the two-day boot-camp that preceded the hackathon, so that the students can understand all aspects of IoT and LoRa.

Among the prototypes that students built in the hackathon are applications such as Pipeline Leakage Detection, Traffic Clearance for Ambulances, Dynamic Displays on Highways, Altering System in Mining, Automatic Mapping of Potholes on the Roads, and Real-time Monitoring of Water Bodies. Students used Raspberry Pi development boards, wireless sensors, cloud computing services, and LoRa technology in creating these prototypes from their own ideas.

Mr. Pankaj Diwan, MD of IdeaLabs, said that the winning teams will be incubated by IdeaLabs to convert the prototypes into full-fledged, marketable products. He added that seeding the culture of Innovation is a step in the right direction to create future-ready Engineers and Entrepreneurs while the students are still on the campus.

Hyderabad Product Leaders, a consortium of product leaders from leading product companies in the city, has committed to collaborate with IdeaLabs for mentoring of the students. Dr. A.S. Rao, the Dean of Innovation, Incubation, Entrepreneurship and Globalisation at VNR VJIET, stated that such hackathons create a conducive environment for innovation and entrepreneurship among the Institute’s students.
