Founded in the year 2017, ‘The Girl’, a social enterprise has been taking its initiative forward by educating school students about gender sensitisation and menstrual health. Moving around districts in both the Telugu states The Girl has taught close to 200 students about topics of awareness which is a part of the project that is covered by the team.
Rohini Naidu the founder of ‘The Girl’ shares, “I started this initiative considering the growing rate of rape and molestation cases among young children. I feel it's my moral responsibility to bring awareness amongst school students. Abuse of any kind should be rooted out completely, be it physical or emotional.”
For her work, she involves experts - doctors, Psychologists, civil aspirants, corporate film makers and educationalists - I have gathered around 15 experts who help me in this initiative. They visit schools and talk to the students and empower them during the weekends,” mentions Rohini, who is also Mrs Perfect Hyderabad 2018.
Mere education doesn't help people to combat challenges in life. To be a better human being, one must gain the basic fundamentals in life Skills. “Being a lecturer and with experience of working as an Asst Professor in English and Soft Skills for over 20yrs, I felt it's time for me to gear up and contribute my best to the society.
Rapid increase in teenage suicides, rapes, molestation of children, lack of encouragement to pursue their interests, parents’ pressure - all these made me think on how best I can help the student community.” “I am a mother of two boys and have been volunteering for the homeless for the past 10years, which makes me realise my responsibilities towards the society,” she adds.
There's no gender for the soul. Every parent has to understand this and help their daughters realize their dreams. Teaching boys to respect girls and getting them into the kitchen to help their moms is the first step towards gender sensitisation which everyone must be aware of. “Raise your boys with sensitivity and that solves most of the problems. There will be no abuse in our families then,” she illustrates. “Our work is also to teach these students computer skills and provide them with career counseling so that they live a happy and a prosperous life.”
