Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people.
When I was a child, my mother liked to make jowar roti for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made dinner after a long, hard day at work. On that evening so long ago, my mother placed a plate of potato chips, mango pickle and extremely burned jowar roti in front of my father. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed! Yet all father did was reaching for his potato chips, smiling at my mother and asking me how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear mango pickle and groundnut oil on that roti and eat every bite!
When I got up from the dinner that evening, I remember hearing my mother apologize to my father for burning the jowar roti. And I’ll never forget what he said: “Dear, I love burned jowar roti.” Later that night, I went to say good night to father and I asked him if he really liked his rotis burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, “Your mother put in a hard day at work today and she’s real tired. And besides a little burned roti never hurts anyone!” I was speechless with his understanding, care and love.
Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. Someone may not be the best at hardly anything, and some people may forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what one must learn over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults and choosing to celebrate each other's differences is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.
