Chittoor and Nellore, are far removed from bright lights, yet 11 underprivileged deserving kids from these regions, will visit the U.S.A, to participate in a prestigious conference dealing with life in space. The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, provides educational facilities to girls from less-privileged backgrounds. Fighting the gender disparity in education is the school’s priority.

Students from the The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya, are all set to visit the USA, for a space conference Note that this is not a fancy ‘International’ school, with top class facilities. It is a simple residential school, open to the girls who yearn to learn.
The kids are seemingly taking full advantage of the education being given to them, and they now have a reason to celebrate as well!
11 girls from underprivileged families, attending the KGBV’s in Chittoor and Nellore, have been invited by the National Space Society, in the US, to participate in the International Space Development Conference, to be held in Los Angeles, on May 24 and are expectedly delighted.
Prathyusha Velaga, K Reddyrani, Sneha Chetipatti, Divya Gujjala, Roshni Shaik, K Preethi, T Sai Sree, M Pooja, V Saida Bhanu, V Aswani and M Chenchu Lavanya, recently received the invitations to take part in the annual space contest, being organised by the National Space Society, in association with the NASA Ames Research Centre. The girls will present posters on potential human settlements or residential colonies in space, and the entries will be sent for judging to NASA.
The state education department and the Planetary Society of India are training the 11 students. G Srinivas, an IAS officer and state project director of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), put forth the proposal for the same. According to him, the initiative took off this year, with submissions from the KGBVs of Chittoor and Nellore districts, which are in close proximity to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota.
The next year will see the project being implemented for all 13 districts in the state. In the current batch, from 18 submissions, 11 received invites from the US organisers. The students, all studying in Classes VIII, IX and X will no doubt return enriched with knowledge, a wealth of experience, and a desire to keep moving forward.
In rural India, due to various socio-economic factors, girls are often denied education. The achievement of these 11 children, should bolster the morale of the parents, so they can see the benefits of educating their children, regardless of gender.
