VMC deploys mist vehicles to improve air quality
Vijayawada: The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has pressed six mist vehicles back into service after completing necessary repairs, intending to improve air quality and control dust pollution in the city. The vehicles resumed operations on Wednesday and began spraying water on major roads. These mist vehicles are used in urban areas to tackle poor Air Quality Index (AQI) levels by spraying a fine mist that binds with harmful particulate matter such as PM2.5 and PM10, forcing them to settle on the ground instead of remaining airborne. Officials said the vehicles will be deployed extensively at construction sites, busy road junctions and other dust-prone areas to control airborne particles, thereby enhancing public safety and reducing environmental impact. The initiative is expected to be particularly effective in areas witnessing heavy vehicular movement and ongoing infrastructure works.
Apart from dust suppression, the mist vehicles will also be used for routine roadside spraying as part of the city’s sanitation drive. This regular exercise is expected to help reduce particulate matter levels and maintain cleaner surroundings. Civic authorities said that mist spraying also contributes to a marginal reduction in ambient temperatures, offering some relief during the ongoing summer season. VMC officials said the restored fleet will operate on a scheduled basis across different parts of the city to ensure better air quality management and improved urban living conditions.
