Edappal Ponnam kuzhiVeettil Sukumaran Nair (10 June 1948 – 16 June 1997), popularly known as Sukumaran, was a popular actor and one of the leading names of the Malayalam film industry along with Soman and Jayan, four decades ago. This was before the advent of the eras of Mammootty and Mohanlal. His entire family was in the film industry, right from his wife, his two sons Indrajith and Prithviraj, the last name already making it big in the film industry of the new millennium. In a career of more than two decades, he acted in nearly 200 films.

During his days as a lecturer, he bagged a chance to make his debut in a film 'Nirmalyam' (1973) directed by M T Vasudevan Nair, a noted writer whose first film it was too. Over the years, it has been considered a classic film and it had the distinction of bagging two National Awards and three State Awards.
