Women should be given training in self-defence techniques to face challenges in life, said Gautam Sawang, commissioner of police, while releasing a training guide on self-defence after inaugurating the four-day self-defence training programme for four hundred women at Vasavya Mahila Mandali here on Thursday.

The Commissioner said that the persons who received training in the camp should teach others in their areas to spread the defence techniques. He expressed concern over the silent suffering of violence against women. He advised the Mahila Mitra volunteers to counsel such victims to come forward to lodge complaints against their perpetrators.

He said that the state government is committed to protect women. Joint Commissioner of Police Venkata Ramana said that 50 per cent of the cases were related to women. He said that the Mahila Mitra members should follow up the cases to take them to logical end.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanti Rana Tata said complimented the Mahila Mitra volunteers for their immediate response in case of any incident. He advised them to prepare a database with all the details of the cases they are handling.

Chennupati Vidya said that the trainers should teach the students and women and others in their areas.Sheeba talked about Mahila Mitra website and Facebook, while G Revati and V Lakshmi spoke on life skills and self-protection respectively.

Earlier, Dr B Keerti elaborated on the training module for the women. G Rashmi, secretary of VMM, V Sri Devi, Inner Wheel district chairman, ACPs V V Naidu, Ramesh, Satyanandam, Srinivas and Ramakrishna and others were present.
