Contract workers held

Visakhapatnam: Demanding redressal of their grievances, the GVMC Contract Workers supported by CPM and CPI staged a protest at the GVMC administrative building here on Tuesday. However, police prevented the workers from entering the building and arrested them.

Heated arguments took place between the union leaders and police. Opposing the police action, the activists tried to enter the building. However, police forcibly shifted the activists to various police stations.

Condemning their arrests, the union leaders said that they would launch indefinite strike, if the government did not increase the wages to the contract workers. The state government is paying Rs 12,000 to the outsourcing employees, but the same wage is not being paid to the contract workers, the union leaders alleged.

President of he Contract Workers Union G Subba Rao and other leaders T Nookaraju, S Ramana, U Raju and Vijaya  were arrested among a large number of activists.
