Godavari river water level stands at 14 ft in Dowleswaram

  • Several island villages in Konaseema are submerged in flood waters
  • People from some villages have been shifted to relief camps

Rajamahendravaram: Flood inflows into Godavari water has started receding from Saturday and water level at Sir Arthur Cotton (SAC) Barrage stands at 14 feet. The officials of Water Resources Department (WRD) are discharging as many as 13.28 lakh cusecs of flood water into the sea.

The second warning is likely to be withdrawn when the flood water level reaches to 11.70 feet. Meanwhile, there is forecast that heavy rains will lash in the catchment area of Sabari and Sileru, the tributaries of river Godavari.

 Though water level is reducing, the lanka villages in the downstream of the Dowleswaram barrage in Konaseema area are  surrounded by flood water, as Vasista, Vynateya and Vrudda Gowthami are in spate with flood water. 

The officials stopped ferrying of the people from the lanka islands.   Many villages are marooned in the agency area and the district administration is making arrangements to shift the people from submerged areas to safer places and to supply food and other material.
 
Collector Karthikeya Misra said that there is no threat from
the flood as it is receding. But, high alert was in force and the officials of Revenue, Police, Water Resource and Fisheries departments were directed to be ready to meet emergencies. 

As many as 832 people were shifted to relief camps and drinking water, food, medical aid etc were arranged to them. Two relief camps in Amalapuram division, one camp in Rajamahendravaram and one relief camp in Rampachodavaram were arranged.

As many as 17 villages in Etapaka and Kunavaram mandals and  two areas in Rajamahendravaram division are mar mooned. Special teams were sent to take care of the people in submerged Thandas. 

Mechanised boats were pressed into service in the agency area. SDRF teams were also sent to some parts of Konaseema and agency areas as a pre-cautionary measure, he said. 

Later, Collector Karthikeya Misra inspected Cotton Barrage and enquired about the flood position with the officials of WRD. 

Sub-Collector CM Saikanth Varma, Urban Superintendent of Police Semushi Bajpayee and Municipal Corporation Commissioner Sumit Kumar and others were present.
