Telangana Cops to spot criminals in a jiffy

Update: 2018-08-03 05:30 IST

Hyderabad: For the first time, the Telangana police have a new weapon its armoury. They have acquired a Facial Recognition System (FRS) which can help spot a person with a crime record from a crowd in a jiffy. According to Telangana Director General of Police (DGP) M Mahender Reddy, the FRS can recognise a criminal by scanning his face in real-time. It has been integrated with TSCOP.

The software allows a police officer to compare a person face with the database of photographs of criminals, wanted persons and even missing persons available in the central database of CCTNS (Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems). “The central database of photographs will be updated by police stations across the state,” he said. When a person’s image is fed into the system, it compares with the pictures in the database and gives out results within a few seconds. The photographs of persons that do not match the central database will automatically be discarded.

They would not be stored anywhere in the system. The DGP said: “Very soon all the Investigative Officers of Telangana will be trained to update the database,” he said.  Reddy hopes that the latest technology will greatly help the state become crime-free. This new software should be able to send a warning to the criminals not to enter TS and resort to mischief.

The police are also developing a suspect inquiry system to know if those who were criminals in the past have reformed themselves or are still continuing with their past activity. This way the police could sift those who had changed their ways for better from die-hard criminals. Those who had changed their old ways would be spared but those who relapse into criminal activity would have to pay a price, warns the DGP.
