MANUU to cultivate mushrooms

  The management of MANUU plan to implement Sewage Treatment Plants and take up mushroom cultivation in the University Campus.

Saria, a Botany student, whose project ‘Women Empowerment through Mushroom Cultivation’ explained nutritional and medicinal importance of mushrooms, especially for women. She also showed how mushrooms contain more proteins and Vitamin D than other sources such as meat and sunlight respectively.

Not only this, but she also demonstrated the economic importance of mushrooms. “Mushrooms are way healthier than other non-vegetarian food and easier to cultivate too. Women in rural areas can efficiently cultivate it at their homes and sell them to make a livelihood. Mushrooms take 25 rupees to grow while their market price is 200 rupees”, she exclaims.

“Mushrooms are even low on fat and carbohydrates and relatively zero on sugars. This way they are more beneficial for those suffering from hypertension and diabetes”, she added.
