Apple to Rename iOS to iPhone OS and iPhone to Apple Phone

Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) is just around the corner, and as per some speculators, one of the probable things on the cards is a renaming session. As per the leaks, the iOS, Apple's proprietary iPhone software, is going to be renamed as iPhone OS. And the iPhone also could be renamed to the Apple Phone.

The first tip about the iOS renaming comes from Jon Prosser who tweeted the two words last evening - iPhone OS.

If this is true, the forthcoming iOS 14 could be termed as the iPhone OS 14. In 2019 Apple renamed the software for iPads to iPad OS and added a bunch of features that were exclusive to the tab only, Apple might choose to do the same for the iPhone.

Though the iPhone OS moniker is not new, till 2010 this is what Apple used to call the iPhone software when they renamed it to iOS. Now that the OS no longer covers iPhone and iPads, maybe it is reasonable to switch back to the previous name to clarify which OS will support which device.

In all possibilities, this is nothing more but just going to be a name change. But to find out we need to wait for WWDC, or one of these speculators can do us a favour.

Another upcoming change, as per Max Weinbach who replied to Prosser's tweet, is that Apple might rename the iPhone to the Apple Phone.

Weinbach shared that he received a mail stating the change in the iOS name and also that the iPhone will be renamed. In this case, renaming doesn't make much sense at all; in all probabilities, users will keep calling the iPhone an iPhone.
