Residents endure contaminated water crisis in Cantonment areas

Update: 2024-03-25 09:31 IST

Hyderabad: Instances of drinking water contamination in the areas of Secunderabad Cantonment, especially Ward II, have become a major concern for the locals living in these localities. Locals allege that irregular water supply in SCB is a perennial issue, but for the past many days, they have been receiving contaminated drinking water, leading to numerous reported cases of waterborne diseases.

Residents claim that despite lodging numerous complaints with SCB regarding the poor quality of water, no permanent solution has been implemented to resolve this issue, primarily due to the absence of a Quality Assurance and Testing (QA&T) wing. After HMWSSB supplies water to the pump houses of the SCB, no water quality checks are conducted.

This is not the first time residents have faced issues with drinking water. The affected areas include Ward II Gun Bazar, Rasoolpura, and several residential colonies in Karkhana.

“The drinking water issue has become a never-ending problem in SCB. Not only are we receiving irregular water supply once every five days, but the quality of the water is also very poor. Sometimes, we receive water with a blackish color and a strange smell emanates from it,” said Ramesh, a resident of Karkhana.

“Many waterborne diseases have been reported in our area lately due to receiving contaminated water for several days. The water is neither potable nor suitable for domestic use.

As a result, we are compelled to purchase water cans. We are frustrated with constantly complaining to the relevant authorities about this ongoing issue. They always assert that it is not contaminated water, but merely muddy water. However, the truth is evident as sometimes a strange smell emanates from the water,” said Nayeem Pasha.
