Nandyal: World Tourism Day was celebrated on a grand note at the PGRS Hall in the Collectorate on Sunday, featuring enthusiastic student participation. Joint Collector Suraj Dhananjay, alongside District Tourism Officer Sunil Kanna and District Social Welfare Officer Siva Reddy, inaugurated the event, emphasizing that tourism involves understanding a region’s history, culture, and traditions.
Addressing the gathering, the Joint Collector urged students to promote Nandyal’s prominent spiritual and tourist destinations—such as Srisailam, Mahanandi, and Yaganti—through social media to boost local economic growth and employment.
He stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness, reducing plastic use, and offering warm hospitality to visitors. Students participated in essay writing, painting, and short film competitions, with winners receiving prizes from the Joint Collector.
District Tourism Officer Sunil Kanna noted that 28 prominent destinations have been identified, including the Belum Caves and Billa Sorgam Caves, alongside spiritual hubs like Ahobilam, which offers adventure tourism. Sunil Kanna added that proposals have been submitted to the government for new ropeway projects at Yaganti and Ahobilam, complementing the existing Srisailam facility.
He called on youth to visit local sites and champion sustainable tourism through environmental protection.
Government officials, department representatives, and students attended the programme in large numbers.
