Students taking part in an environmental awareness programme
Vijayawada: Andhra Loyola College (Autonomous) here organised a series of environmental awareness programmes to sensitise students and the public to environmental protection, conservation of natural resources and eco-friendly festival celebrations.
The programmes were organised jointly by the Department of Botany, NSS, NGC, Eco Club and IQAC of Andhra Loyola College, along with the Ecology Commission of the Andhra Pradesh/Telangana Jesuit Province and Xavier Board. Around 300 students participated in the various activities.
As part of the initiative, a slogan-writing competition was held on the theme “Eco-Friendly Ganesha, Happy Mother Earth”, encouraging students to promote eco-friendly Vinayaka celebrations and create awareness about the environmental hazards caused by non-biodegradable materials. A drawing competition on “Ozone Shield: Earth’s Protective Umbrella” highlighted the importance of the ozone layer in protecting life from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Students used their artwork to convey messages on ozone protection, environmental conservation, climate responsibility and sustainable living.
An elocution competition on “Plastic Pollution: A Growing Threat to Our Environment – Remedies” provided students an opportunity to speak about the harmful impact of single-use plastics, improper waste disposal and plastic pollution on water bodies and biodiversity. They also suggested practical solutions and eco-friendly alternatives.
A special display of Vinayaka Patri, featuring 21 traditional varieties of leaves, was organised to highlight their cultural and ecological significance. The programme stressed the use of natural clay idols and natural colours while avoiding materials that contribute to pollution.
An environmental awareness rally was also conducted on the college campus, with students carrying messages promoting environmental protection and sustainable festival celebrations. Principal Fr Dr S Melchior, Vice-Principal Fr Arul Jyothi, Controller of Examinations Fr Vijay, Vice-Principal Dr B Siva Kumari, NSS coordinators and faculty members participated in the programmes.
