BIS seizes gold jewellery sold without valid hallmarking licence
Vijayawada: The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) here conducted search and seizure operations at two jewellery outlets in Bhadrachalam on Friday for allegedly selling gold jewellery without a valid BIS hallmarking licence and mandatory Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) numbers. A team of BIS officials, comprising Joint Directors Shanmukha Shiva Palli and T Arjun, accompanied by hallmarking representatives BDN Malleswarao and P Ajay Kumar, conducted searches at Sri Venkata Ratna Jewellers and Sri Devi Jewellers.
During the operation, the officials seized approximately 522.337 grams of gold jewellery. The seizure included 250.257 grams comprising 84 articles from Sri Venkata Ratna Jewellers and 272.084 grams comprising 89 articles from Sri Devi Jewellers. According to BIS officials, the outlets were found selling gold jewellery without a valid BIS hallmarking licence, without the mandatory HUID and with spurious markings, including the BIS Standard Mark and fineness indications. The violations constitute a breach of compulsory hallmarking provisions under the BIS Act, 2016.
Prem Sajani Patnala, Scientist-E, Director and Head of the BIS Vijayawada Branch Office, said action would be initiated under Section 29 of the BIS Act for violations. The provision prescribes imprisonment of up to one year or a fine of not less than Rs. 1 lakh for a first contravention. The fine may extend up to five times the value of the goods involved in the violation.
BIS urged consumers to verify the authenticity of hallmarked gold jewellery by checking the HUID number through the BIS Care mobile app. Consumers can also use the app to verify certification details and report misuse of BIS marks, including the ISI mark, CRS mark and hallmark. BIS said the identities of whistle-blowers would be kept confidential. Consumers can report instances of misuse of hallmarking or ISI marks to the BIS Vijayawada Branch Office, #56-2-11, First Floor, AP Markfed Building, APIIC Colony Road, Auto Nagar, Vijayawada-520007.
