EESL aims to finish nationwide urban smart streetlighting by March 2027
Vijayawada: Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit has assured that the first phase of Andhra Pradesh’s smart LED streetlighting project will be completed across Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) by March 2027.
The project was discussed in the backdrop of growing concerns over recurring El Niño-driven heatwaves, rising temperatures and the impact of climate change on rapidly urbanising cities. The issue was highlighted at IFAT India 2026 in Mumbai, where experts stressed the need for integrated climate-resilience strategies combining efficient water management, wastewater reuse, energy conservation and expansion of urban green cover.
Energy experts and technology providers at the event appreciated the Andhra Pradesh government’s initiative to implement one of India’s early technology-driven smart LED streetlighting projects in collaboration with EESL, under the Ministry of Power.
During an interaction following a presentation by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Department on the State’s approach to urban sanitation, water management and streetlighting infrastructure, experts commended Andhra Pradesh for its emphasis on technology-enabled and public-oriented urban infrastructure.
The State plans to replace 10.5 lakh conventional streetlights on a saturation basis with smart LED lights linked to a centralised State-wide control and monitoring platform. The system will facilitate real-time monitoring, GIS-based asset management and automated alerts.
Officials said the project is expected to save 19.57 million units of electricity annually, while reducing carbon emissions, electricity expenditure and maintenance costs for ULBs.
MA&UD Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar, who led the Andhra Pradesh delegation at IFAT India 2026 along with Swachh Andhra Managing Director B Sunil Kumar Reddy, reviewed the project’s progress at a virtual meeting attended by CDMA Commissioner and Director P Sampath Kumar, AP GENCO and APSEEDCO MD S Naga Lakshmi, and EESL CEO Akhilesh Kumar Dixit.
Suresh Kumar said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and MA&UD Minister P Narayana had directed officials to expedite the project and complete it within the stipulated schedule, while maintaining accountability, transparency and public i nterest.
Dixit said agreements had been completed with more than 120 ULBs, while field surveys were under way in several municipalities. Special priority has been given to Visakhapatnam ahead of the forthcoming CII Global Summit. The stretches identified by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation are being surveyed and taken up for implementation, with completion targeted by the end of September.
The first phase will cover 7.5 lakh smart LED streetlights, including Intelligent Lighting Management (ILM) controls and a centralised dashboard, across ULBs by March 2027. The technology ecosystem, including LED lights, ILM devices, IT platforms, SIM cards and service systems, is being finalised with vendors.
The project is expected to strengthen energy efficiency and support technology-enabled, climate-resilient urban infrastructure across Andhra Pradesh.
