Kakinada: The Police have arrested a gold appraiser in connection with the alleged misappropriation of gold ornaments pledged by customers at the Bank of Baroda branch on the premises of the Government General Hospital (GGH) here and recovered jewellery weighing 1.020 kg, valued at Rs 1.45 crore, Superintendent of Police Bindu Madhav said.
Addressing a press conference at the district police office, the SP said the One Town police registered a case in July after irregularities came to light in the handling of gold ornaments linked to gold loan accounts at the bank. During the investigation, police found that gold ornaments weighing 1,056.90 grams associated with 44 gold loan accounts had been misappropriated. Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused allegedly replaced the gold ornaments pledged by customers with fake jewellery while working as a gold appraiser at the bank.
The accused, Narava Suribabu, a resident of Chediga village in Kakinada Rural mandal, was arrested and the police recovered most of the missing jewellery from him. About 36 grams of gold ornaments are yet to be recovered, the SP said.
Under the supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police Dr Mahanti Kishore Kumar, special teams were formed by One Town Circle Inspector Nagadurga Rao and Sub-Inspector Swaminayudu to investigate the case and trace the missing ornaments.
