VIJAYAWADA: Heavy rainfall in Vijayawada delayed the commencement of vote counting for the Vijayawada Muncipal Corporation (VMC) elections on Tuesday, with counting staff arriving at the designated centre at Andhra Loyola College drenched in rain.

The counting process, which was scheduled to begin at 8 am, is likely to be delayed by nearly an hour as staff are still arriving at the centre after battling heavy rain. The Loyola College campus has also been inundated with rainwater, affecting arrangements at the counting centre, including the media point.

Meanwhile, the district election authorities are taking necessary steps to facilitate the commencement of counting as soon as possible. Officials are making efforts to ensure that all arrangements are in place despite the adverse weather conditions.

In Vijayawada, the electoral contest has attracted 19 candidates for the Mayor's post and 359 candidates contesting from various divisions, making the counting process crucial for political parties and candidates.

In contrast, vote counting in the municipalities of Kondapalli, Jaggaiahpeta, Nandigama and Tiruvuru commenced as scheduled. The counting of postal ballots has also begun at these centres.

In an unusual development, the key to the strong room at Jaggaiahpeta Municipality reportedly went missing. Officials searched for the key but could not trace it. Subsequently, the authorities broke open the lock to gain access to the strong room and commenced the counting process.

Meanwhile, the counting process for the Machilipatnam Municipal Corporation (MMC) in Krishna district commenced at Krishna University. Election authorities opened the postal ballot boxes and began counting the postal votes.
