VIJAYAWADA: Heavy rain lashed NTR district on Tuesday, disrupting normal life and affecting routine activities in several areas. The district administration, under the guidance of Collector Dr G Lakshmisha, has taken precautionary measures to tackle the situation, deploying special teams to monitor vulnerable locations, prevent flooding and ensure public safety.

According to the rainfall data, the district recorded a total of 374.10 mm of rainfall, with an average of 18.71 mm during the observation period from 8.30 am to noon. Nandigama division recorded the highest aggregate rainfall, followed by Tiruvuru and Vijayawada divisions.

Nandigama division received 142.9 mm of rainfall, with an average of 20.41 mm during the morning observation period. The division experienced an intense spell soon after 8.30 am, recording 55.6 mm between 8.30 am and 9 am. It had also received 57.5 mm during the preceding 24 hours.

Tiruvuru division recorded 119.4 mm, with an average of 23.88 mm. The heaviest spell of 33.1 mm occurred between 10 am and 11 am. Vijayawada division received 111.8 mm, averaging 13.98 mm, with its highest hourly rainfall of 35.4 mm recorded between 10 am and 11 am.

Meanwhile, the administration has intensified monitoring of vulnerable areas, particularly low-lying localities and locations along the Budameru stream, in view of the continuing rainfall. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel and other emergency response teams have reached vulnerable points along Budameru as part of the preparedness measures. Officials are coordinating with the departments concerned to respond promptly to any emergency.

Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) authorities have been clearing trees that fell on roads due to adverse weather conditions to restore traffic movement and minimise inconvenience to commuters. Municipal teams are also attending to complaints and taking measures to address waterlogging and other rain-related problems.

The district administration is coordinating with municipal, police, revenue and disaster response teams to minimise the impact of the downpour. Residents, particularly those in low-lying areas and near streams and drains, have been advised to remain alert and avoid travelling on inundated roads or approaching overflowing waterways. Commuters have also been urged to exercise caution until weather conditions improve.
