Journalists associations staging a protest demanding suspension of CI Jayanna
Pattikonda: Tension prevailed in Pattikonda on Sunday as the Journalist JAC spearheaded a vociferous dharna in front of the local police station, demanding the immediate suspension of Urban CI Jayanna over allegations of physical assault against reporter Nagaraju.
The confrontation erupted following a sensitive case involving a Dalit woman from Pandikona village who eloped.
Although police had previously advised the family to stay away from the village for two months to avert clashes, they were allegedly attacked upon visiting relatives at a local hospital. When family members—including women, children, and elders—sought police protection, reporter Nagaraju went to the station to cover the events.
Journalists alleged that CI Jayanna verbally abused Nagaraju, grabbed him by the neck, and forcefully ejected him. Condemning the high-handed behavior, protests led by APWJ constituency president Salurangadu escalated into a unified Journalist JAC agitation on Sunday, backed by the CPI, CPM, farmers’ organizations, and former YSRCP MLA Kangati Sridevi.
Sridevi questioned public safety if working journalists face such treatment inside police stations.
Later, a round-table meeting at Kanyaka Parameswari Function Hall deliberated on future action, urging senior police officials to launch a comprehensive inquiry and suspend the CI.
