Nellore: Even as theater managements have been collecting huge prices from the people for beverages and eateries, the Legal Metrology officials have started cracking the whip on them and booking cases. They had booked four cases last month. Officials are planning to conduct checks every month.

Though rules have been framed for multiplexes and theatres to sell products at the MRP, majority of them have been selling water, beverages, popcorn and other snacks at the excessive prices to the people.

A team of officials paid a surprise visit to theatres in the city on Sep 21 and inspected prices and quality of food items and enquired about the prices of tickets and manufacturing dates of food products and noticed several deviations.

They also conducted raids on theaters in October and warned the managements to sell eateries and beverages as per MRP. A senior official said the raids are still continuing.

In fact, many consumers in the city have lodged several complaints against the managements of the theaters. Even a 500-ml water bottle is being sold at Rs. 40 ignoring the MRP. There are 13 multiplex theatres and three normal theatres in the entire city.

"Even though the state government issued guidelines not to collect any parking fee from the people, these theatres have been collecting charges without any fear. Even the administration is also not taking action against them and they were booking cases for name sake," said S Karunakar from the ZP Colony area.

Non-packed food items like samosas, popcorn, sandwiches, pizzas, ice cream etc tera are sold at these multiplex theatres at abnormal prices ignoring MRP rates. Theatre managements have been charging Rs.20 to Rs.40 for parking the two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

They have been charging Rs.40 to Rs.60 for one-litre water bottle, Rs.100-120 for popcorn, Rs.80-130 for coffee and cold coffee, Rs.200 for pizza and coke, Rs.65 for cool cake in the theatres.

They don't allow eateries from the outside including a water bottle. Irritated by the attitude of the theatre managements, people have started lodging complaints against them to the district administration for necessary action.

A senior official from the legal metrology department said that they had conducted raids on the theatres and booked cases last month. He said they would continue the raids and stern action will be taken against theatres that violate the guidelines and collect huge prices from the consumers.
