Visakhapatnam: A major fire broke out on a tugboat at the outer harbour in Visakhapatnam on Monday.

The fire accident occurred in the afternoon when the tug was transporting personnel for civil works. While 28 of the occupants were rescued, one is missing, and search is on for him.

As the fire spread rapidly, the crew of offshore support vessel abandoned their vessel and jumped into the waters to save themselves from fire.

Followed by a loud explosion, a thick smoke emanated from the vessel, and the crew jumped off the vessel to escape from getting burnt.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) immediately swung into action and took rescue operation. While the fire engine boats tried to extinguish the flames, ICGS Rani Rashmoni was diverted to rescue the crew along with Visakhapatnam Port Trust boats.

ICGS Samudra Paheredar, ICG helicopter and ICGS C-432 were also pressed into action to further augment the rescue operation. The fire reportedly caused burn injuries to about 15 people.

Five of them are said to have suffered severe burns. The reason for the fire accident is yet to be ascertained.
