VIJAYAWADA: In view of the heavy rainfall and flood threat triggered by the Murasu cyclone, the NTR district administration has been placed on high alert on Tuesday, with District Collector Dr G Lakshmisha directing officials to take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure public safety.

Reviewing the evolving weather situation through the Command Control Centre established at the District Collectorate, the Collector, along with District Joint Collector S Ilakkiya, has been continuously monitoring rainfall, flood conditions and emergency preparedness while issuing necessary instructions to officials.

Dr Lakshmisha emphasised that the safety of people remains the administration's top priority. He directed officials to identify vulnerable areas prone to heavy rainfall, flooding and landslides and shift residents to safer locations without delay.

As part of the evacuation plan, officials have been instructed to relocate around 250 to 500 people by noon and approximately 1,000 families by the evening, depending on the prevailing situation.

Special attention is being paid to upstream areas, including Vissannapeta, where rising water flows could pose a flood threat. Officials have also been alerted in mandals vulnerable to cloudbursts and sudden heavy downpours to ensure timely response and prevent loss of life and property.

In Vijayawada city, sanitation teams have been working continuously to prevent rainwater stagnation on roads and clear waterlogging. The Collectorate Command Control Centre is functioning round the clock, coordinating with all government departments to ensure swift communication and immediate response to emergency situations.

The administration is also keeping a close watch on the health and safety of pregnant women, senior citizens and other vulnerable groups. Adequate food, accommodation and essential facilities are being arranged at rehabilitation centres for people shifted from vulnerable locations.

The Collector stated that no major untoward incidents had been reported in the district so far and that the situation was under constant monitoring.

He appealed to the public not to panic but to remain vigilant, follow instructions issued by government officials and avoid travelling to vulnerable areas during heavy rainfall. People requiring emergency assistance have been advised to contact the official helpline numbers.

The district administration reiterated its commitment to round-the-clock monitoring and coordinated emergency response to safeguard lives and minimise the impact of the cyclone-induced rainfall.
