Police fire warning shots after Pulivendula clash
Tensions flared in Pulivendula, Kadapa district, after nominations for the local body elections when a row broke out between coalition and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) supporters.
Groups of people were seen throwing stones at each other at a nomination centre when the YSRC supporters charged at the police. Six rounds were fired into the air to try to stop the scuffle and police used batons and tear gas to clear the square of demonstrators.
People in the local area were left shaken and worried by the disturbance. The police have now registered a case and are investigating what happened. They warned that they would take strong action against anyone thought to be responsible for encouraging the violence or for fighting at the nomination centre.
