Prisons must focus on reform: Collector
Anantapur: District Collector O Anand emphasised the importance of inmate reform and social reintegration while serving as chief guest at the ‘Prisoners’ Day’ event held at Anantapur District Central Jail on Friday to mark Mahatma Gandhi’s 157th birth anniversary.
Highlighting Andhra Pradesh’s pioneering welfare programs for prisoners, the Collector urged inmates to maintain good conduct, participate actively in vocational livelihood activities, and prepare to lead independent lives upon release. He assured full government backing, including support for establishing small-scale industries and access to free legal aid through the District Legal Services Authority. Drawing inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s time spent reading in jail, he encouraged inmates to utilize the prison library to transform into upstanding citizens.
District Legal Services Authority Secretary Rajasekhar also addressed the gathering, detailing available free legal assistance. The event began with dignitaries paying floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi’s portrait.
Additional SP Iliyas Basha, Jail Superintendent Venugopal Reddy, and various officials attended, celebrating a shared vision of rehabilitation and fresh beginnings for the inmates.
