Rajamahendravaram set to have police Commissionerate

Rajamahendravaram: Police services in and around the historic city of Rajamahendravaram are set to be expanded with the State government deciding to upgrade the city into a police commissionerate. The State Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, approved the proposal at its meeting on Wednesday. Full-fledged orders are expected to be issued within the next 10 days, according to senior police officials. A government report noted that Rajamahendravaram has witnessed considerable growth in urbanisation, commerce, education and transport facilities following the reorganisation of the State. The presence of three national highways, universities, medical and engineering colleges, major hospitals, large markets and an airport has resulted in a substantial increase in the movement of people and vehicles. Officials said the Commissionerate system was being proposed in view of the changing local conditions and growing policing requirements.

A police urban district was created in August 2010 with Rajamahendravaram as its headquarters, covering the city as well as the rural mandals of Kadiyam, Seethanagaram, Korukonda and Rajanagaram.

The subsequent reorganisation of districts during the previous government led to changes in the jurisdiction and reduced the significance of the urban district. Several mandals were later brought under the supervision of the East Godavari district SP. The Kovvur, Gopalapuram and Nidadavole Assembly constituencies were earlier under the West Godavari district police, while Anaparthi and Mandapeta were under the Kakinada district police. These areas were recently brought under the jurisdiction of the East Godavari district SP. With Rajamahendravaram being upgraded as a Commissionerate, policing will be organised under the supervision of two IPS officers and two non-cadre SPs. Officials said the new structure would facilitate wider services and modern facilities for maintaining law and order, preventing crime, regulating traffic, reducing road accidents, tackling cybercrime and strengthening women’s safety. Under Zone 1, headed by a DCP, the Central and South Zone divisions in Rajamahendravaram will be reorganised. The jurisdiction will include the One Town, Two Town, Three Town and Prakash Nagar police stations, besides Bommuru, Dowleswaram and Kadiyam police stations. Zone 2, also under a DCP, will cover the North and East Zone divisions and include Korukonda, Gokavaram, Seethanagaram, Airport, Rajanagaram, Anaparthi, Biccavolu, Rangampeta, Mandapeta, Mandapeta Rural, Angara and Rayavaram police stations. Zone 3, under a non-cadre SP, will cover the Kovvur sub-division and include Kovvur, Kovvur Rural, Chagallu, Tallapudi, Devarapalli, Gopalapuram, Nallajerla, Nidadavole, Samisragudem, Peravali and Undrajavaram police stations.

The Women Police Station and Command Control Room will function under the coordination and supervision of the DCP. The proposed Commissionerate structure is expected to streamline policing across the expanded jurisdiction and strengthen coordination among different wings of the police department.
