‘Anakapalli’ review: A raw and emotional love-revenge drama
Rating: 3/5
Anakapalli is a solid love-revenge drama that tries its best to depict love, attraction, violence, and the misfortunes of the wrong path. The film has a strong cast with Vikram Sahidev, Sandhya Vashishta, and Tarak Ponnappa in the lead roles. It is directed by debutant Kagesh and produced by Kandregula Naidu and Trinadha Rao Nakkina under their respective banners. Anakapalli is a big hit on its release date, October 2, due to its rustic setup, powerful performances, and other notable features.
Story
Set in Anakapalli, the story follows Surya, the son of an honest electricity department employee, Samba Siva Rao played by Trinadha Rao Nakkina. Surya is not comfortable with his middle-class life and is drawn to Bullet, a notorious local goonda (Tarak Ponnappa). He gets close to him and becomes one of his trusted henchmen. Later, Surya falls in love with Amrutha (Sandhya Vashishta) and asks her out on a date, which leads to an awkward situation involving an electricity meter. However, things take an entirely different turn when Bullet crosses paths with Amrutha and turns Surya’s world upside down.
Performances
Vikram Sahidev is powerful as the conflicted Surya and manages to balance the romance, action, and emotional moments of the film effortlessly. I must also commend Tarak Ponnappa for his performance as the villainous Bullet. Sandhya Vashishta looks stunning in the role of Amrutha and fits well into the rustic setup of the film. Trinadha Rao Nakkina and Indraja are also praiseworthy with their roles as Surya’s parents. They bring the right emotions to the roles of concerned parents. The performance of Kandregula Naidu as the drug lord is also noteworthy.
Technicalities
Debutant director Kagesh needs to be commended for the confident direction. The film has a strong rustic feel throughout, apart from the interval block, which provides an exciting turn of events, making it a powerful second-half booster. The second half of the film is emotional and keeps you engaged until the very end. The camera beautifully captures the visuals of Anakapalli, giving it a unique look that no other film seems to have. Songs, dialogues, and costumes are all in sync with the theme and elevate the viewing experience. Anakapalli also delivers in terms of production value, with the technical team doing their best to make the film believable and immersive.
Analysis
Anakapalli was a huge success after its release, as it managed to deliver powerful performances, a rustic look, and a compelling story. It is the kind of movie that can keep you engrossed throughout and make you think about the misfortunes of the wrong path and the pain it brings to families. Anakapalli may have slow moments due to a boring narrative but is saved by the first-half interval block, a powerful second half, and an emotionally charged climax. It is a must-watch for those who love Telugu cinema.
