Green tea, a staple among health-conscious people, is one of the world’s most popular health drinks. Believed to have originated in China thousands of years ago, green tea is made from the same plant as black tea, Camellia sinensis. Unlike black tea, it undergoes minimal processing, allowing it to retain many of its beneficial compounds. Its light yellow or pale green colour and rich antioxidant content make it a popular choice for health and beauty enthusiasts.

Green tea contains antioxidants that help combat free radicals, which can damage the body’s cells. Its potential skin benefits have also made it a popular ingredient in skincare products. Green tea extracts are used in toners, face masks, cleansers and other treatments to soothe irritated skin and support a healthy, glowing complexion.

Green Tea for Healthy Skin

Green tea is rich in polyphenols and other nutrients that may benefit the skin. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe irritation and support skin health. It is also used in home beauty treatments, including facial toners, masks and steam treatments.

Green tea contains compounds such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which have been studied for their potential protective effects against UV-related skin damage. However, green tea should not replace sunscreen or medical treatment for skin conditions. Claims that it can prevent skin cancer or repair DNA in humans require further clinical evidence.

Green tea may also be helpful for people dealing with oily skin and acne. Its natural compounds may help regulate excess sebum production and reduce inflammation. However, green tea is not a guaranteed treatment for acne, blackheads or clogged pores.

Weight Management and Overall Health

Green tea contains caffeine and EGCG, both of which have been studied for their possible role in weight management. Research suggests that these compounds may have a modest effect on metabolism and fat oxidation. However, drinking green tea alone cannot guarantee weight loss or specifically reduce belly fat. A balanced diet and regular physical activity remain essential for maintaining a healthy body. Green tea is naturally low in calories when consumed without sugar or milk. Some studies have also explored its potential role in supporting blood sugar regulation and insulin sensitivity, although more research is needed to establish its long-term effects.

Homemade Green Tea Beauty Treatments

Green tea can be used to prepare a simple facial toner at home. Boil half a cup of water and pour it over green tea leaves or a tea bag. Allow it to steep for two to three minutes, then strain and let it cool. Apply the liquid to your face using clean cotton wool. You can store the remaining tea in a clean, airtight container in the refrigerator and use it within a short period. Another option is a green tea and honey face mask. Mix cooled green tea with a small amount of honey, apply it to the face and leave it on for about 10–15 minutes before rinsing with plain water. Always perform a patch test before trying a new skincare ingredient, as lemon juice and other ingredients may irritate sensitive skin.

Green tea can also be combined with ground almonds and curd to make a gentle scrub. Avoid harsh scrubbing, especially if you have sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Benefits for Lips and Teeth

Green tea may also be used as part of a simple lip-care routine. Applying a cooled, damp tea bag to the lips may provide temporary soothing relief, although it is not a substitute for a moisturising lip balm.

Drinking unsweetened green tea may support oral health. Certain compounds in green tea have antibacterial properties, and research has examined their potential role in reducing harmful oral bacteria. However, green tea should not replace regular brushing, flossing or dental check-ups.

Green tea can be a useful addition to a healthy lifestyle and skincare routine. While it offers antioxidants and potential health benefits, it should be used with realistic expectations and alongside proven approaches to nutrition, skincare and overall well-being.
