Tips to protect your eyes from makeup irritation and infections this festive season
From a swipe of kajal to shimmering eyeshadow and dramatic false lashes, eye makeup often takes centre stage during the festive season. Whether you are getting ready for Diwali celebrations, family gatherings or a festive evening out, the right makeup can complete your look. But while experimenting with glitter and new beauty products, how often do you think about your eye health?
Certain cosmetic ingredients, unhygienic application practices and prolonged makeup use can cause irritation, allergic reactions and infections. Long hours of wear, exposure to dust and pollution, and sleeping without removing makeup can further aggravate eye discomfort. Fortunately, a few simple precautions can help you enjoy your favourite festive looks while protecting your eyes.
How Can Eye Makeup Affect Your Eyes?
For many people, apply eye makeup is a daily staple. However, applying kajal or eyeliner along the inner eyelid, also known as the waterline, may interfere with the tear film that keeps the eyes lubricated. This can contribute to dryness, watering and irritation, particularly among people with sensitive eyes.
Some cosmetic ingredients may also trigger allergic reactions, causing redness, itching or swelling. Avoid unlabelled or homemade kajal, as its composition and safety may be uncertain.
Glitter and eyeshadow
Glittery eyeshadow can add festive flair, but loose particles may enter the eyes during application or removal. These particles can irritate the ocular surface and, in some cases, scratch the cornea. Choose products specifically formulated for the eye area and never use craft glitter as eye makeup.
Mascara and false eyelashes
Mascara and eyelash adhesives can cause irritation or allergic reactions in some individuals. Sharing these products may transfer microorganisms and increase the risk of infection. Always use adhesives designed specifically for cosmetic eyelash application and discontinue use if discomfort develops.
Cosmetic-related eye problems can range from temporary irritation to allergic reactions and infections requiring medical treatment. If you experience persistent redness, swelling or discomfort after applying eye makeup, discontinue the product and consult an eye specialist. Eye pain, sensitivity to light or blurred vision warrant prompt medical attention. If a cosmetic product enters the eye, rinse it immediately with plenty of clean, lukewarm running water. Avoid using antibiotic or steroid eye drops without professional guidance.
Five Ways to Protect Your Eyes This Festive Season
1. Check your products before applying
Read ingredient lists, check expiry dates and follow usage instructions. Choose cosmetics from reputable manufacturers that are specifically formulated for the eye area. Avoid products that have changed in smell, colour or consistency.
2. Keep makeup tools clean
Wash your hands before applying makeup and clean brushes and applicators regularly. Never share mascara, eyeliner or kajal. Replace products according to their recommended usage periods to minimise the risk of contamination.
3. Avoid prolonged makeup wear
Wearing makeup for extended periods may aggravate discomfort, particularly in people prone to dry eyes. Remove makeup before sleeping and avoid applying excessive product close to the eyes. If irritation develops, stop using the suspected product.
4. Remove makeup gently
Use a gentle, eye-safe makeup remover and avoid vigorous rubbing. If a particle enters the eye, do not rub it or attempt to remove it with sharp objects. Rinse gently with clean water or sterile saline. Seek medical attention if discomfort persists or vision changes occur.
5. Be cautious with new products
Trying a new festive look can be exciting, but pay attention to how your eyes respond. If a product causes itching, redness or swelling, discontinue use. Avoid applying more makeup to conceal irritation, as this may worsen the symptoms.
When Should You Consult an Eye Specialist?
Mild irritation may improve after removing the product and avoiding further exposure. However, persistent redness, unusual discharge, swelling or a continuing foreign-body sensation should be evaluated by an eye specialist.
Let Your Festive Look Shine
Festive beauty should make you feel confident, not leave your eyes uncomfortable. Choosing suitable cosmetics, maintaining hygiene, applying products carefully and removing makeup before bed can help minimise preventable eye problems. This festive season, embrace the colours and sparkle while making eye health an essential part of your beauty routine. After all, protecting your vision is just as important as looking your best.
