Research and International Impact
• Multimodal AI research and impact: Her research focuses on improving how AI systems learn from and understand images
and video through better visual data, model training and evaluation. Her academic work was selected for an Oral Presentation (1.8%) at NeurIPS 2024, one of the world’s leading AI conferences, and later surpassed 1,000 citations and 2,000 GitHub stars. Its models, data and evaluation resources were adopted or extended by researchers across more than 30 countries and regions, including teams associated with NVIDIA, Apple and Harvard.
• Scientific service: Invited to review research for the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, the European Conference on Computer Vision and the Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems.
Professional Achievements
• Meta AI research: Joined Meta Superintelligence Labs as a Senior Research Scientist, working on Llama’s multimodal capabilities across text, images and video, and subsequently moved to Meta Reality Labs to work on wearable AI, including research connected to Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
• Millennium: Joined the firm’s Core AI team as its second AI engineering hire and built search, question-answering and AI-agent systems over millions of financial documents; the systems were used by more than half of the company’s employees.
• Goldman Sachs career: Rose from analyst to vice president, received the firm’s highest global performance rating and a one-year accelerated promotion, and was transferred internally from Bengaluru to New York to take on a leadership role on the Interest Rates Desk.
• Goldman Sachs impact: Led teams and built auto-quoting systems that helped triple trade volume, while developing optimisations that made firm-wide pricing ten times faster; the work was named second runner-up in Goldman Sachs’ Bengaluru Innovation of the Year competition.
Leadership and Service
• Public service: Founded MettleFlow, an NGO, and built a WhatsApp triage chatbot during the COVID-19 hospital-bed crisis that scaled to more than 100,000 concurrent requests.
• Campus leadership and teaching: Led digital innovation for IIT Bombay’s Entrepreneurship Cell and helped secure funding and partnerships; mentored IIT Bombay students from project ideas through working prototypes; and later served as a teaching assistant for a seminar on large language and vision models at NYU.
The Story
What if AI could understand not only words, but also the images and video that shape everyday life? Originally from Anantapur, AI researcher Sai Charitha Akula works on this challenge by improving how AI systems learn from visual information, reason across different forms of data, and are evaluated for accuracy and reliability.
Akula studied Computer Science at IIT Bombay, graduating with honours and a minor in Electrical Engineering. She then built a career in quantitative research and development at Goldman Sachs, rising from analyst to vice president. After receiving the firm’s highest global performance rating and an accelerated promotion, she was transferred internally from Bengaluru to New York to take on a leadership role on the Interest Rates Desk. She led teams and built auto-quoting systems that helped triple trade volume, while developing optimisations that made firm-wide pricing ten times faster - a contribution recognised as second runner-up in Goldman Sachs’ Bengaluru Innovation of the Year competition.
Always driven by curiosity, Akula followed her deeper interest in artificial intelligence even after rising to vice president in quantitative finance, moving from building systems for financial markets to researching how machines understand images, video and language. She completed a master’s degree in Computer Science at New York University with a perfect 4.0 GPA and received the Hedwig Kurzbart Master’s Fellowship for Outstanding Performance. At NYU’s CILVR Lab, she conducted research in generative and multimodal AI, with a particular focus on how AI systems understand visual information.
She developed new methods for visual understanding, including stronger visual representations, improved multimodal-model training and more rigorous evaluation. One of the resulting papers was selected for an Oral Presentation (1.8%) at the 2024 Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS), one of the world’s leading artificial-intelligence conferences. The paper later crossed 1,000 citations and 2,000 GitHub stars.
Akula next joined Millennium’s Core AI team as its second AI engineering hire. There, she developed retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) systems that helped employees search, understand and reason over millions of financial documents. These AI systems were used by more than half of the company’s employees.
Akula later joined Meta Superintelligence Labs as a Senior Research Scientist, initially working on the multimodal capabilities of Llama - Meta’s family of openly available AI models that, like the technology behind ChatGPT, can understand and generate language, with newer versions also capable of understanding images and video.
Her research focused on improving how Llama understands text, images and video through supervised fine-tuning and reinforcement learning, targeted synthetic and human data, and automated and human evaluation. She subsequently moved to Meta Reality Labs, where her work extends this experience into wearable AI, including research connected to Ray-Ban Meta glasses and helpful assistants that can better understand the visual world.
Her long-term mission extends beyond any one model or product. She wants to make advanced AI more capable, reliable and useful in real-world settings, including education, healthcare, scientific discovery, public safety, environmental monitoring, robotics and autonomous systems. From quantitative finance to globally recognised AI research and wearable technology, her journey offers an inspiring example to Telugu students, especially young women hoping to build careers in science and technology.
Guiding Motto
My goal is to build AI that can understand the world around us and offer the right help at the right time - accurately, safely and in a way that people can trust.
