As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform the financial sector, IIT Hyderabad (IITH) has launched an AI Innovation Lab in collaboration with S&P Global to provide students and faculty with opportunities to address real-world challenges at the intersection of AI and finance.

The lab, inaugurated on Thursday, brings together IITH’s academic and AI expertise with S&P Global’s industry experience through hands-on projects, open exploration, workshops and mentored research. The initiative is aimed at creating a platform where students can develop and prototype AI-driven solutions for challenges facing the financial sector.

The inauguration was attended by Prof. B S Murty, Director, IIT Hyderabad; Nilam Patel, Managing Director, India Operations, S&P Global; Sravanthi Lanka, Senior Director and Site Head, Hyderabad Operations, S&P Global; and representatives from both institutions.

Under the initiative, students will have opportunities to participate in industry-led challenges, expert interactions and practical learning programmes. Selected students and faculty members will also engage in collaborative research, enabling them to gain exposure to emerging AI technologies and their applications in finance.

Speaking at the launch, Prof. B S Murty said AI is creating new opportunities across sectors, including finance, and that preparing students to address real-world problems is an important part of technology education and research. He said the collaboration would combine academic expertise with industry experience, enabling students and faculty to explore complex challenges, develop practical solutions and undertake meaningful research.

S&P Global Chief People Officer Girish Ganesan said the company was committed to empowering the next generation with skills needed to succeed in an AI-enabled world. He said the S&P Global-sponsored lab reflects the company’s commitment to supporting talent and providing students with opportunities to learn, create and lead.

The collaboration builds on IIT Hyderabad’s role as a Strategic Collaborator for StepForward, an initiative of S&P Global and the S&P Global Foundation backed by a $10 million, three-year commitment focused on workforce readiness and AI education

The new AI Innovation Lab is expected to strengthen the link between academic research and industry requirements while encouraging innovation in AI applications for finance. It will also help students gain practical experience, develop industry-relevant skills and prepare for careers in an increasingly AI-driven financial ecosystem.
