UoH hosts conclave on Shaheed Baji Rout & youth-led nation-building
The University of Hyderabad (UoH) organised a National Conclave on Shaheed Baji Rout to commemorate the young freedom fighter’s legacy and discuss the role of youth in nation-building. The event brought together academic leaders, scholars and students to reflect on the freedom movement and contemporary civic responsibilities.
The programme began with an introductory address by Dr. Anshuman of the Department of Political Science, who outlined the life and sacrifice of Baji Rout, widely recognised as one of India’s youngest martyrs in the freedom struggle.
Prof. Hrishikesh Mohanty, former Professor of Computer Science at the university, delivered the keynote address. He discussed the impact of the movement associated with Baji Rout’s martyrdom and its role in bringing local rulers and citizens together against British colonial rule.
Connecting the historical events with present-day responsibilities, Prof. Mohanty emphasised the role of young people in nation-building. He encouraged students to remain active and responsible towards society, economic development and environmental concerns.
University of Hyderabad Vice-Chancellor Prof. J. Anuradha highlighted the importance of remembering young freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives during the independence movement. She noted that commemorating their contributions can help younger generations reflect on values and civic responsibility.
As part of the conclave, the university organised an essay-writing competition on the theme, “The Role of Nation-Building Among the Youth”. Students participated in the competition, and prizes and certificates were presented to the winners in recognition of their contributions. His death became a symbol of resistance during the freedom struggle and remains part of Odisha’s historical memory. The conclave concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Soumyashree, who acknowledged the contributions of the speakers, faculty members, organisers and participants. She also congratulated the essay competition winners and thanked the students who took part in the event.
