Light to moderate rain forecast across south Bengal till Wednesday, heavy rain likely in few places

Kolkata: The Met Office has predicted scattered light to moderate rain across south Bengal districts till Wednesday, while there is a possibility of heavy rain in some parts, and north Bengal may get more showers.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Kolkata said that the monsoon trough is still active.

"It has entered the southern part of West Bengal through Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and extends to the Bay of Bengal. In addition, there is a clear low-pressure area over Madhya Pradesh. There is a cyclonic circulation in Bangladesh and adjacent areas. Due to this, rain accompanied by thunderstorms may continue from north to south of West Bengal for a few more days," a Met Department official said.

However, there is no possibility of heavy rain in Kolkata at present, but scattered rain may continue till Wednesday. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour may occur at one or two places.

The same forecast has been issued for Howrah, South 24 Parganas, Jhargram, Nadia, and Murshidabad districts. Heavy rain may occur in Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, Birbhum, East Burdwan, and West Burdwan districts from Tuesday. Heavy rain is forecast in East Midnapore, West Midnapore, Purulia, and Bankura districts on Wednesday. There is a yellow alert for rain in all districts of south Bengal from Sunday to Wednesday.

Meanwhile, scattered heavy rain may occur in several districts of north Bengal on Sunday and Monday. An alert has been issued in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts. Except for Cooch Behar, these four districts of the north will again experience heavy rain on Friday and Saturday. Apart from this, scattered rain is likely in North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda districts.

The minimum temperature in Kolkata on Sunday was 25.4 degrees Celsius, 0.9 degrees below normal, while the maximum temperature was 32.9 degrees Celsius, 0.5 degrees above normal.
