Happy Choti Diwali 2026: Wishes, Messages and WhatsApp Status

Diwali is a few days away and I notice how people have already started preparing their homes. Markets are busy, with shoppers buying diyas and decorations while families clean and decorate their houses. Choti Diwali is also an event, during which many people follow traditional customs one day before the main Diwali festival.

Across India, this day goes by various names. In some regions, it is called ‘Naraka Chaturdashi’, while in others, it is called ‘Roop Chaudas’ or ‘Kali Chaudas’. This celebration is linked to Narakasura, who was defeated by Lord Krishna with the help of Satyabhama.

When is Choti Diwali in 2026?

This year, Choti Diwali will be celebrated on Sunday, November 8. As per the Hindu calendar, the ‘Chaturdashi Tithi’ starts at 10:47 am on November 7 and ends at 11:27 am the following day. Since the timing for morning rituals may vary by location, it is recommended to consult a local ‘Panchang’ before performing them.

How is Choti Diwali celebrated?

In many households, the day begins early with ‘Abhyanga Snan’, a traditional oil bath. People apply oil and an herbal paste known as ‘ubtan’ before bathing, after which they dress in clean clothes. Another common practice is lighting ‘diyas’ outside the home.

Families also make sweets, decorate their entrance with ‘rangolis’, and offer prayers. In Goa, the burning of effigies of Narakasura is part of the celebrations.
