International Chocolate Day 2026: Celebrating the Legacy of Milton Hershey
In Short
International Chocolate Day celebrates one of the world's treats. International Chocolate Day also remembers Milton Hershey's lasting contribution to the confectionery industry.

International Chocolate Day 2026
Chocolate can make ordinary moments feel a bit more special. Whether it is a chocolate bar, a box of truffles a slice of cake or a warm cup of cocoa chocolate has become part of celebrations and everyday indulgence, across the world. International Chocolate Day is celebrated every year on September 13 giving chocolate lovers another reason to celebrate chocolate.
The date is also associated with the birthday of chocolatier and businessman Milton S. Hershey, who was born on September 13 1857. The U.S. National Confectioners Association lists September 13 as International Chocolate Day.
Milton Hershey’s journey to becoming one of America’s known chocolatiers was far from straightforward. Born in Pennsylvania he had limited schooling and experienced failures in his early business ventures. He initially worked in the confectionery business. He found success, with caramels before turning his attention to chocolate.
Hershey’s biggest breakthrough came when he decided to focus on milk chocolate. After becoming fascinated by chocolate‑making machinery at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago he began experimenting with chocolate production. The Hershey Chocolate Company was established in 1894, and after years of experimentation, Hershey’s Milk Chocolate was introduced in 1900. The company went on to make chocolate more accessible, to consumers.
Hershey’s legacy goes far beyond chocolate. He was deeply committed to giving back. Believed that having wealth meant having a responsibility to help others. Along with his wife Catherine Hershey, he started what would grow into the Milton Hershey School. This school was built to offer a home and a good education to children who needed it most. His work, in philanthropy helped shape the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania and left a lasting mark on the community.
Chocolate lovers can look at September 13 as a chance to see how this sweet treat has changed over time. Dark, milk and white chocolate all. Feel different and today’s chocolate makers keep adding nuts, fruit, spices and other flavors. It is also a time to remember the skill and history that make chocolate a common part of our daily life.
