June 2 is observed as International Sex Workers Day to bring to the fore the miserable living conditions under which this community works.

While a few women volunteer to become sex workers for the lure of big money involved, a few women are forced into the profession due to circumstances. And of course we have heard of young girls in India being sold as child brides to the rich who turn them into sex slavery. As if that was not enough coronavirus lockdown situation has made their lives worse.

With zero business, sex workers are not only broke but a few are even starving. at least this is the plight of sex workers in India during the lockdown imposed due to the pandemic. In fact, there was a petition filed at the Delhi High Court seeking direction to the government to ensure welfare of sex workers.

With no money in hand due to lack of work, sex workers are forced to depend on food packets being distributed by the government. It is learnt that more often than not there is not enough food for them as the queue is only growing by the day, thanks to the stranded migrant labourers too.

Wait, the nightmare is not over for them yet. Their worst fear is that they may never get clients anymore because of the phobia brought in by the coronavirus pandemic. A few women have even called NGOs and helpline numbers in distress to share their fears. So the future seems bleak for this profession which is on the verge of collapse.
