Festive celebrations often come with a variety of delicious dishes, which can be challenging for those following a ketogenic diet or trying to lose fat. According to Rahul Kamra, Keto Coach and Founder of Ketorets, planning ahead and making mindful choices can help you enjoy family gatherings while managing your dietary preferences. Here are three simple points to keep in mind.
Rahul Kamra, Keto Coach & Founder, Ketorets shares Keto-Friendly Diwali Plate: What to Pick First at a Family Celebration.
1. Eat Before You Leave and Plan Your Plate
Your keto-friendly Diwali plate starts before you leave for a family function or celebration. Hunger and temptation can be a difficult combination, especially when you are trying to lose fat. Eating a meal before leaving home can help you avoid arriving hungry and making impulsive food choices. At the celebration, look for simpler, cleaner preparations, such as grilled dishes or options that are not coated in flour or other ingredients that may not fit your diet.
2. Choose Suitable Dishes at the Celebration
When selecting food at a party, look for dishes that can fit into your ketogenic diet, depending on their ingredients and preparation. Options may include Palak Paneer, Kadai Paneer, Shahi Paneer, Paneer Tikka, Bhindi Masala, Baingan Bharta, Tandoori Gobi and Tandoori Mushrooms. Bacon may also be an option for those who eat it, provided it fits their dietary preferences. Prefer grilled, tandoori or simply prepared dishes, and check for hidden sugars, flour-based coatings and sauces. Rahul also suggests that you do not need to disclose your dietary preferences at a family gathering. Instead, focus on enjoying the occasion and choosing what works for you. If you are particularly sentimental about festive food and family traditions, you can plan your approach in advance: either stick to suitable options or consciously enjoy the festive meal without guilt and return to your usual routine afterwards.
3. Be Mindful of Desserts and Plan Ahead
Desserts can be challenging for those following a strict ketogenic diet because traditional festive sweets are often sugar-based and high in carbohydrates. Rather than sampling every dessert, look for alternatives that better suit your dietary preferences. You can look for alternatives such as keto chocolate mousse, sugar-free cheesecake, almond flour ladoo or coconut barfi made with a suitable low-carb sweetene.
