Sarva Pitru Amavasya is considered as the final day of sacred Pitru Paksha period and it holds the great significance for reminiscing and paying homage to our departed ancestors. They are also known as Mahalaya Amavasya and this day is also observed with various rituals like Shraddh, Tarpan, Pinda Daan, food offerings and charity. Coming to this year, it is observed on 10th October, 2026.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya, also known as Mahalaya Amavasya, marks the conclusion of the 16-day Pitru Paksha period. It falls on the Amavasya Tithi and is considered an important day to remember and honour departed ancestors.

Significance Of Sarva Pitru Amavasya:

• For Missed Shraddh Rituals: Those who could not perform Shraddh on the specific Tithi of an ancestor during Pitru Paksha can traditionally perform the rituals on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

• For Unknown Ancestors: The day is also observed to honour ancestors whose exact death date or Tithi is unknown.

• Honouring All Ancestors: As the name suggests, Sarva Pitru Amavasya is considered a day to remember and offer prayers for all departed ancestors.

• Beginning Of The Festive Season: Mahalaya Amavasya also marks the end of Pitru Paksha and is followed by the beginning of Shardiya Navratri. In several traditions, Mahalaya is associated with the invocation of Goddess Durga before Navratri.

Sarva Pitru Amavasya 2026 Date And Tithi Timings:

According to Drik Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi begins on October 9, 2026, at 9:35 PM and ends on October 10, 2026, at 9:19 PM.

The important timings for performing Shraddh rituals on October 10 are:

• Amavasya Tithi Begins: October 9, 2026 – 9:35 PM

• Amavasya Tithi Ends: October 10, 2026 – 9:19 PM

• Kutup Muhurat: 11:45 AM to 12:31 PM

• Rohina Muhurat: 12:31 PM to 1:18 PM

• Aparahna Kaal: 1:18 PM to 3:37 PM

Sarva Pitru Amavasya Puja Vidhi:

• Devotees traditionally begin the day by waking up early and taking a bath before starting the rituals. They should wear clean clothes and maintain a peaceful and devotional atmosphere throughout the day.

• Water mixed with black sesame seeds and flowers may be offered to the Sun God while seeking blessings for the successful completion of the ancestral rituals.

• For Tarpan, Kusha grass is traditionally used, and devotees offer water mixed with black sesame seeds while remembering their ancestors and reciting appropriate Pitru mantras.

• Pinda Daan may also be performed according to family customs. The Pindas are generally prepared using ingredients such as cooked rice and other traditional offerings.

• Food is also offered as part of the ancestral rituals. In some traditions, portions of food are kept aside as Panchabali offerings for animals and other living beings, including cows, dogs, crows and ants.

• Many families also offer food to Brahmins and perform charity by donating food grains, clothes or other essentials according to their capacity.
