State Election Commissioner Anil Chandra Punetha inspects counting centres for MPTC and ZPTC elections at Acharya Nagarjuna University in Guntur on Saturday
Amaravati: The ruling NDA alliance led by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu registered a resounding victory in Andhra Pradesh's MPTC and ZPTC elections, making significant inroads into YSRCP strongholds and delivering a major political setback to former chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy in his home district of Kadapa.
As counting progressed on Saturday, the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) emerged as the dominant party, with Jana Sena and the BJP contributing to the alliance's tally. The TDP's victories in Pulivendula and Mydukur ZPTC constituencies and its capture of the Kadapa Zilla Parishad became major talking points. In Bondapalli, TDP candidate Pashala Neeraja defeated Anusha, daughter of senior YSRCP leader and Leader of Opposition in AP Legislative Council Botsa Satyanarayana, by 5,136 votes.
According to the available information, the TDP won 5,879 seats, Jana Sena 811 and BJP 151, while the YSRCP secured 1,469. Others won 246. The ZPTC tally put TDP victories at 337, with leads in another 47 seats. Jana Sena was leading in 61 and BJP in 18. The YSRCP had won 36 and was leading in 11, while others secured two seats.
In Kadapa, TDP candidate Bharati won the Pulivendula ZPTC seat by 1,463 votes, while Krishna Kishore captured Mydukur by 18,903 votes. The alliance also won 64 of the 65 MPTC seats in the Pulivendula Assembly constituency.
TDP candidate won the remaining Reddipalli MPTC seat in Vempalle mandal by 29 votes. In Badvel, TDP candidate Obulamma won the Kashinayana ZPTC seat by 8,391 votes.
However, the YSRCP retained Vempalli and Vemula ZPTC seats, with Battala Venkata Sivamma winning the former by 19,203 votes and Satya Prabhavatamma the latter by 1,569 votes.
Jana Sena candidate Pamidipati Srinivasa Rao recorded the biggest victory, winning the Krosuru ZPTC seat in Palnadu by 30,273 votes. Singamshetti Venkata Bala Prasad won Nuzendla by 28,863 votes. Major TDP victories included Regati Lakshmi Vedavathi in Dhone by 23,169 votes, Katti Sarojini in Machavaram by 22,882, Putta Brahmam in Mylavaram by 21,407 and Unnam Deepika in Piduguralla by 20,167 votes. Other notable wins included Nagipogu Pullaiah in Brahmamgarimatham by 17,295, Mandalapu Soumya in Mundlamuru by 18,728 and Modi Eshwaramma in Donakonda by 15,785 votes.
Several contests were decided by narrow margins. BJP candidate Gade Venkatalakshmi won the Golugonda MPTC seat by two votes. TDP candidates Aruna in Thamminapatnam, Nellore district, and Kolli Aruna Kumari in Penumantra, West Godavari district, won by just one vote each.
Meanwhile, counting disputes triggered protests at several centres. Former YSRCP MLA Jakkampudi Raja demanded a recount in Korukonda, alleging that the party's candidate had initially led by over 800 votes before the TDP candidate was declared victorious.
At AMAL College in Anakapalli, a dispute erupted over the Sirasarapalli MPTC result after the YSRCP candidate was declared winner by 17 votes and alliance leaders sought a recount.
The YSRCP also alleged that officials withheld victory declarations in Venigandla and Gavandlapalem in Guntur district, Budili in Sri Sathya Sai district, and Shettur, Kundurpi and Kambadur in Anantapur district. In Nandyal, former MLA Shilpa Chakrapani Reddy demanded a victory certificate for YSRCP candidate Noor Basha, who reportedly won Abbipuram by 17 votes.
In Nellore, YSRCP candidate Sujatamma protested after a recount changed the Thamminapatnam result from an initial six-vote YSRCP lead to a one-vote victory for TDP candidate Aruna. Former minister Roja also protested in Nagari, alleging that officials wrongly declared the TDP candidate victorious in the Illathuru MPTC seat. The allegations and recount demands kept several counting centres tense even as the NDA celebrated its sweeping gains.
