Amaravati: The YSR Congress Party has approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court again, seeking directions to police officials to disclose details of criminal cases registered against candidates contesting the local body elections within 24 hours of receiving an application.

YSRCP MLC Lella Appi Reddy filed the petition, arguing that prospective candidates lack clarity on the criminal cases, if any, registered against them and the police stations where the cases are pending. The petition seeks directions to Station House Officers (SHOs) to furnish the information within 24 hours of an application being submitted. The High Court has permitted the lunch-motion petition to be heard, and the matter is expected to come up shortly.

The party has also written to the State Election Commission (SEC), seeking instructions to police officials across Andhra Pradesh to provide candidates with details of cases registered against or pending against them. In his letter, Appi Reddy alleged that the coalition government was using the police to harass prospective YSRCP candidates and obstruct their participation in the elections.

He claimed that cases were being registered against YSRCP leaders at various police stations despite their having no direct or indirect connection with the incidents concerned.

Such action, he alleged, was intended to intimidate party leaders and discourage them from contesting. He urged the SEC to direct the director general of police to stop the alleged harassment and ensure that candidates received the required information.

Meanwhile, the High Court has delivered its order on an earlier YSRCP petition seeking arrangements at every district headquarters to facilitate the filing of nominations for Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency (MPTC) and Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency (ZPTC) elections.

The party had sought directions to the SEC to provide nomination facilities at the offices of collectors or district election officers. The court ruled that if a candidate requests an additional nomination centre, the concerned election officer must decide on the request before the nomination deadline expires.

The latest petition over criminal-case disclosures adds to a series of legal challenges initiated by the YSRCP during the local body election process, with the party alleging that administrative and police-related obstacles could hamper its candidates’ participation.
