Ballari BJP protests over FIR against leader over SIR voter list row
Ballari: The Ballari district BJP unit staged a protest at Royal Circle on Monday against the FIR registered against municipal corporation Opposition Leader Srinivas Modkar over allegations related to 7,561 voters during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
BJP leaders alleged that the case against Modkar was politically motivated and intended to prevent the party from raising questions about alleged irregularities involving minority voters. They demanded a detailed investigation into the allegations concerning the 7,561 voters and sought withdrawal of the FIR. After the demonstration, BJP leaders and hundreds of workers attempted to march towards Brucepet police station.
Police personnel stopped the protesters and made elaborate security arrangements around the station. As the protesters insisted on moving ahead, the situation turned tense for some time.
Police subsequently detained several BJP workers as a precautionary measure. Pushing and jostling were also reported during the detention. BJP district president
Anil Naidu questioned the police action and maintained that the party had followed the prescribed procedure while submitting Form 7 applications. “The complaint was filed under Form 7 in accordance with the law. We have not asked for anyone’s name to be deleted,” he said.
BJP leaders accused the Congress government of allegedly misusing the police machinery against those questioning the SIR process.
They said raising concerns about voter lists was a democratic right and demanded a transparent
inquiry. BJP leaders, municipal councillors and hundreds of party workers participated in the protest. Police continued to monitor the situation closely to prevent further escalation.
