Coast Guard rescues critically ill fisherman
Mangaluru: The Indian Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who fell into the sea while hauling a fishing net in the deep waters off the Mangaluru coast, around 100 km (54 nautical miles) from the shore, during a midnight operation on November 1.
According to a Coast Guard statement, the incident occurred aboard the Indian fishing boat Shiv Sagar, whose crew members were engaged in hauling nets around midnight. One of the fishermen accidentally slipped and fell into the rough sea. Though fellow crew members managed to pull him out of the water, he was unconscious and in a critical condition, requiring immediate medical attention.
The boat’s crew immediately sent a distress message through VHF wireless communication to the Coast Guard District Headquarters No. 3 (CGDHQ-3) in Mangaluru.Responding promptly, the Coast Guard deployed its interceptor vessel ICGS C-448 to carry out the rescue operation in the open sea. Despite darkness and challenging sea conditions, the team located the fishing boat after an extensive search.
The seriously ill fisherman was carefully transferred to the Coast Guard vessel and given initial medical assistance. He was subsequently brought to the New Mangalore Port Authority (NMPA) jetty and shifted to a nearby hospital in Mangaluru for further emergency treatment. The timely response and coordinated rescue operation helped save the fisherman’s life in difficult conditions at sea.
